GEORGE NEWS - Poems from Inside is a collection of poems written by offenders from George Correctional Services, and the diversity and dynamics of the book is enhanced by the fact that every author comes from a different background and speaks a different language.
"This collection is not only a testament to the power of words but also aligns with the government's vision of promoting nation-building through literacy, social cohesion, and the rehabilitation of offenders," says project facilitator Nkosinathi Menziwa.
Each poem in the book is an original composition by the offenders, many of whom had no previous experience in writing poetry.
"Their passion for self-expression was evident during the training phase. When presented with the opportunity to learn how to compose poems for mass publication, they seized the opportunity with both hands, and the process of training to write the poems became like a fierce battle among them," says Menziwa.
The book is a platform where aspiring creative writers can exhibit their talents while freely expressing their inner feelings and thoughts. The poems convey powerful messages of hope, love, and unity, as well as the harsh realities of life, including death and the pain of imprisonment.
Menziwa, who is a correctional officer in George, says being a poet and writer himself, he takes immense pride in the work that has been produced. This family man from Thembalethu was born in Graaff-Reinet and his writing journey began as a young student at Isibane Public Primary.
"My first poem was published in the school's commemoration booklet in 1993, and since then, I have never stopped composing poetry. I have published four books, a mix of poetry and short stories, all of which are available in local libraries."
He says Poems from Inside is the result of a creative writing pilot project that he introduced and facilitated, aiming to provide a platform for offenders to express themselves creatively.
"I had the privilege of compiling and editing all the poems in this collection, and it was a rewarding experience to witness the creativity and passion that emerged from within the confines of prison walls," he says.
"My mission through literacy is to inspire younger generations, whether inside or outside prison, to take pride in their indigenous languages and cultures."
Writers of the poems in the book are André Jacobs, Siyabulela Vyfer, Brandon van Zyl, Lebohang Daniels, Thanduxolo Ntondini, Enrico Scheepers and Lindokuhle Ntondini.
