Update
GEORGE NEWS - The police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving after an accident in Beach Road in Pacaltsdorp on Saturday, in which a horse died and its rider, a 13-year-old boy from Rosedale, sustained serious head injuries.
The accident happened at about 12:20. The boy was admitted to hospital with a fractured skull.
Western Cape Health spokesperson Bianca Carls said he is in a stable condition.
According to Southern Cape Police spokesperson Capt Malcolm Pojie, the boy and horse were apparently going at a gallop from Kerk Street to Beach Road, when a car driving from the direction of George hit them.
"The boy (who was riding bareback) was flung from the horse.
"His back and head apparently hit the ground. An ambulance took him to George Hospital."
Pojie said the driver of the car was not injured. He was alone in the car.
"The owner of the horse is a local person and the boy had his consent to ride it."
He said young boys riding horses on public roads is becoming a regular sight.
Although it is posing a threat to road safety, police cannot act against them as it is a matter that falls under municipal jurisdiction.
The horse was hit when he and his rider crossed Beach Road in the vicinity of the Spar.
At the time of going to press, George Municipality had not responded to a query about by-laws pertaining to horse riding on public roads.
