GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route SPCA (GRSPCA) receives phone calls about horses on the highway, foals lying next to the road or horses being knocked over by vehicles almost daily - especially on the N2 near townships in the area.
According to GRSPCA senior inspector Salome Bruyns there is currently a crisis in George with the uncontrollable breeding of horses in the townships and indigent areas.
"The problem is getting out of hand and horses are losing their lives walking over highways and busy roads. Especially stallions looking for mares in season," she says.
"One of the ways to prevent future unwanted foals is to geld the stallions."
She says the owners of the stallions are desperate to have them gelded, but the cost to geld a stallion is much more than they can afford and the GRSPCA also can't afford to cover all the costs.
"We need your help. There are so many members of the community who are proud horse owners and the horses are in very good condition, but they simply cannot afford the high rate of gelding their stallions. This is a huge problem as it leads to more foals being born on a daily basis," she says.
GRSCPA inspectors often have to deal with horses being hit by cars and the trauma the inspectors endure stays with them forever.
The GRSPCA's aim is to geld 50 horses. To achieve that, they need R50 000.
