GEORGE NEWS - Former loved teacher at York High School for 17 years, Harold (Hal) Cable (79) died doing what he loved - riding his motorbike.
The accident happened in Hope Street behind George prison at about 17:50 on Wednesday 12 January.
According to his family, it is believed that he lost control of his motorbike when he rounded a bend and was blinded by the sun.
"He will be remembered as an incredibly loving and caring husband to June, his wife for 57 years," his son John told George Herald.
"He was also a wonderful father to his three children, a grandfather to seven and recently became a great grandfather. He'd drop anything at a moment's notice to help anyone in need. His genuine love of life, his deep faith and his kind and caring nature impacted so many.
"He always had a joke and a song for every occasion and could be heard whistling as he went about his daily activities.
"He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word and greeted everyone by raising one of his many luminous caps, followed by a bear hug."
Cable started teaching science and biology at York High School in 1980 and spent the next 17 years participating in all aspects of school life, including hostel duties, cross-country, squash and many stage productions.
He was also a member of the George Arts Theatre and was actively involved in many church activities, including starting the Student Christian Association at York High School. He was also one of the lay directors at Emmaüs.
Cable was also a very successful vegetable farmer in Hansmoeskraal. He later relocated to a farm in Great Brak River where he enjoyed his cattle and sheep.
"His leadership and kindness inspired, motivated and encouraged everyone he met. He has left a huge void, but his legacy will remain. We are so privileged to have had him for nearly 80 years," said John.
