GEORGE NEWS - The Herold veldfire remains active.
Favourable weather conditions prevail and a backburn will be implemented on the mountain today from the railway line upwards. Resources have been allocated and ground teams are in place to monitor.
Aerial support will be sent in as soon as the weather allows.
The public is urgently requested to refrain from recreational hiking today on any unofficial hiking trails through plantations. All official hiking trails remain closed by CapeNature until further notice.
There is no current threat to people and infrastructure.
A huge thank you from all of the partners involved to those organisations and members of the public who have so kindly delivered food and beverages for distribution.
Due to prevailing wind George is currently enveloped in smoke and ash from fire on the mountain. Ground crews are actively working on suppressing fire lines.
Motorists are requested to proceed with caution. Members of the public with any form of breathing problem should please stay indoors.
Residents of George have opened their hearts for the firefighters fighting the fire.
People are still welcome to donate items such as water, cold drinks, Bar Ones, bananas, wet wipes, eye drops, etc.
The donations can be dropped off in George at the George fire and rescue services in Mitchell Street. From there it will be distributed to the firefighters.
