GEORGE NEWS - George joined the rest of the world in observing World Aids Day on 1 December to help overcome ignorance and stigma surrounding HIV/Aids.
The event was organised by Khanyisile Fortuin, district sector leader for the LGBTQI sector for the South African National Aids Council. George Municipality was the host and main partner.
George Mayor Jackie von Brandis said that the world has observed World Aids Day since 1988 to raise awareness and promote action against HIV/Aids.
"This year's theme is 'Take the Rights Path: My Health, My Right' which emphasises the importance of recognising health as a fundamental human right," said Von Brandis.
Leading the attendees in dance and helping to spread the message was Neliswa Nkwali (middle), provincial chairperson for HIV Sector under South African National Aids Council).
She said in 2023 an alarming 250 children lost their lives to Aids-related illnesses every day, and every 25 seconds someone in the world is newly affected by HIV.
"These figures should remind us of the urgent need for collective action," she said.
"HIV/Aids is not the responsibility of a single person or organisation; it is a societal issue requiring united efforts. Let us acknowledge and support the work already being done by the [community development] department through workshops, support groups, and outreach programmes. Everyone has the right to access life-saving medication and live a healthy life. Together, we can help ensure that this right becomes a reality for all," she said.
