GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The South African Weather Service has issued a level 2 warning of strong, damaging winds for Thursday 8 July, accompanying a cold front.
Gale force NW winds of 50 to 60km/h, with gusts up to 80km/h are expected over a large area starting from the Namaqua District and the interior of the Western Cape, spreading to the south coast by the afternoon.
This includes Hessequa, Mossel Bay, George, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.
Offshore, between Cape Columbine and Plettenberg Bay, strong to gale force winds are expected from the morning with significant wave height of 4 to 5m by the afternoon.
The winds are expected to moderate by the evening from the west.
Localised damage to formal and informal settlements is possible. Fallen trees may affect properties and road travel. High-sided vehicles may be at risk of falling over as result of crosswinds, particularly on the N1, N2, N7, R321 and R43.
The public is warned to be aware of sudden cross winds if travelling, especially between buildings, fallen trees or power lines. Ensure that all temporary structures are well anchored.
Small boats must stay away from the open sea and seek the shelter of a harbour, river estuary or protected bay.
