GEORGE NEWS - A legacy is something you leave or give to others, something that will last beyond your lifetime.
For many this means money or possessions, but a life legacy entails your story, the lessons you have learned, values, beliefs, your hopes and your dreams. A life legacy is something from the heart. Perfection is not the goal. Expressing your thoughts, your feelings; saying what you want to say is what is important.
The first step towards creating hope and leaving footprints through storytelling, art and creativity within a community touched by cancer was taken in 2017. This wonderful initiative will continue when cancer survivors will once again have the opportunity to leave footprints, through sharing their stories of survivorship and hope.
Cancer survivors include people diagnosed and living with cancer, their family, the family of those no longer with us, caregivers or anyone from the community touched by cancer in any way.
Cancer Survivors Day
3 June is International Cancer Survivors Day and CancerCare once again wishes to invite all cancer survivors throughout the Garden Route to share their stories through different forms of art and creativity. This can include paintings, pottery, photography, writing or any other expressive art form.
The stories and art will be exhibited at the CancerCare "Creating Hope, Leaving Footprints" Art Exhibition and Survivor Event on Saturday 9 June. It will also form part of a more long-term project towards leaving footprints for those touched by cancer.
The 2017 art exhibition at CancerCare included the work of 15 artists. Art exhibited included paintings, pottery, photography, glass stain work and much more.
The overall aim is for this to be an event filled with joy, camaraderie, hope, compassion, faith, love and remembrance, honouring those touched by cancer for their strength and courage.
So, if you are touched in some way by cancer - an artist living with cancer, sharing your life with someone with cancer, or even lost someone to cancer - you are invited to become part of this unique, meaningful opportunity to exhibit your art and share your story of healing, creating hope and leaving footprints through your art.
Submissions must be sent to engela.vandermerwe@cancercare.co.za to reach her at the latest on Friday 4 May. Submissions must include: a short story of your cancer journey; how (if indeed) it influences your art / craft; a photo of yourself; and a photo of your art.
