GEORGE NEWS - The trial of three men accused of assaulting Jack Jonas in the CBD on 9 December 2018, is scheduled to finally start in the George Magistrate's Court on 8 October.
The three suspects, Lionel Appels, Jonathan Malgas and Luigi Brown, stand accused of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) after Jonas was allegedly attacked and robbed on the corner of Hibernia and Cradock streets at about 01:00 that morning.
The incident was sparked when Jonas, who was on his way home from the annual Christmas Lights Festival, accidentally bumped a pedestrian crossing the street with his car.
Jonas stopped to observe the pedestrian's injuries, but before he could get out of his car he was allegedly hit by one of the suspects after which he was pulled from the car and severely assaulted using a full quart (750ml) beer bottle.
His passenger ran for help and upon his return he allegedly saw the three suspects kicking and hitting Jonas.
Jonas was rendered unconscious and transported to hospital. He reported the incident three days later on 12 December 2018.
He only then realised that his car had been damaged and some of his belongings, including his cellphone, wallet and his passenger's cellphone, had also been taken.
In January 2021 the matter was provisionally removed from the court roll with instructions from the prosecutor that the investigating officer had to follow up. The matter was placed on the roll earlier this year and the suspects appeared again on 11 May.
Their previous appearance was on Monday 25 July when the case was postponed to 8 October for trial to start. The suspects are not in custody.
