GEORGE NEWS - A fire that occurred early on Thursday morning, 8 August in a business on the corner of Nelson Mandela Avenue and Buitekant Street, burned for more than a day and was only declared extinguished at 10:00 on Friday.
According to Johan Brand of the George Fire Department, the cause of the fire remains unknown. The fire brigade was notified of the fire by 01:56 on Thursday morning and arrived around 02:00.
Despite the fire being contained at about 09:00, the contents of a warehouse were still ablaze.
Extinguishing it was challenging due to debris and the contents of the buildings hindering access.
According to the fire brigade the long burning time can be attributed to a combination of factors.
The stacking of the stock made it difficult to get access to the seat of the fire and material that burned was mostly class A fuels (paper, polystyrene, plastics, clothing, etc.), as well as Class B flammable liquids in the form of domestic aerosol spray cans.
George Municipality confirmed that there were people living in the building, but no injuries were reported.
