GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - The Sedgefield woman who allegedly conned prospective holidaymakers and accommodation establishments countrywide out of thousands, was denied bail.
Marianne Roux (32) appeared in the Thembalethu Magistrate's Court on Thursday morning, 18 July.
During a lengthy testimony the investigating officer, Const Lindinkosi Yoko, said that, given the nature of the crime, Roux would in all probability continue defrauding people if she was granted bail.
Acting as a booking agent using the Facebook page Eden Travel Holiday Homes, Roux allegedly defrauded people by using deposits meant for accommodation establishments throughout the Southern Cape to finance her own lifestyle. She was arrested at her home in Sedgefield on Friday 21 June.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson, Capt Malcolm Pojie, this scam is believed to have collectively swindled innocent people out of more than R70 000.
"We believe that more people could have been conned and appeal to potential victims to report it to their nearest police station or contact Const Yoko at the Conville police station on 044 803 3300."
Pojie told the George Herald that people as far as Lephalale, Midrand, Carletonville, Kempton Park and Bellville have fallen prey to this alleged scam.
Roux will be back in court on 22 August.
