GEORGE NEWS - The R102 / R404 crossing at George Airport, notorious for being a high accident zone, tested motorists' patience during the holiday season when long queues were experienced, especially during peak times when flights landed or departed.
No improvement at the intersection can be expected anytime soon, as reported by George Herald journalist Michelle Pienaar at the start of the holiday season last year.
Jandre Bakker, spokesperson for strategic management and operational support in the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure, said the department is not planning any upgrades of the intersection in the current MTEF (medium term expenditure framework).
Changes to the intersection will take place in conjunction with the construction of the proposed George western bypass.
"No project timelines have been set for this project and no additional project information can be provided at this stage, as this project is resource dependent."
The developer of the industrial development opposite the airport, Spear REIT Ltd CEO Quintin Rossi, said they will be building a traffic circle at the exit of the airport as part of their development.
"Only once we have reached certain milestones will we be engaging on the way forward for the R404/R102 intersection, as the building of the western bypass impacts which authority - local or provincial - takes over the responsibility of that intersection.
"Further to this we are currently workshopping either a large circle or signalised intersection for the R404/R102," said Rossi.
