GEORGE NEWS - Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) has confirmed that there is no need for alarm regarding the smoke emanating from George Airport as it is part of a full-scale aerodrome emergency exercise.
A statement released by Acsa on Wednesday 9 October at 13:00, says that the exercise is mandated by South African aviation legislation and is held every second year.
The objective of the exercise is to test the readiness of the airport in the event of a disaster.
The emergency exercise includes various role players such as SAPS, Garden Route District Disaster Management, fire and rescue services, the bomb squad, emergency medical services (EMS), and traffic police, among others.
“We anticipate a significant amount of activity at George Airport, and the public is requested not to be alarmed. Normal airport operations will not be affected during the emergency exercise,” said Ernest Mulibana, senior manager: corporate communications at Acsa, in the statement.
