LIFESTYLE NEWS - On World AIDS Day 2025, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) commemorates national commitments to the prevention, treatment and care services contributing towards efforts to end the HIV epidemic.
In the spirit of uBuntu, SANBS celebrates the courage and generosity of donors who participated in Red Saturday on 29 November – a historic, continent-wide blood donation initiative.
This remarkable campaign united communities across 14 African countries, showing that even in times of economic, environmental and social challenges, collective action can transform the health response and save lives.
Red Saturday was more than an event – it was a powerful movement. Thousands of donors stepped forward, proving that compassion and solidarity can overcome obstacles, including the ongoing challenges posed by HIV.
Each donation represents not just blood, but hope – a vital lifeline for HIV-positive patients as well as millions of others who rely on a safe, sustainable blood supply.
“Red Saturday reminds us that blood donation is more than a medical procedure – it is a deeply human act,” said Monique Schreiner, Senior Manager: Donor Relations, South African National Blood Service. “Each donor plays a vital role in sustaining healthcare. Their courage saves lives and inspires hope.”
Blood is always in demand. Voluntary donors provide essential support to, amongst others:
- Mothers experiencing childbirth complications
- Cancer patients undergoing treatment
- Trauma victims
Children with chronic blood disorders.
Every unit of donated blood is rigorously screened through various tests. These measures contribute to the safety of the blood supply for the patients who depend on it.
On World AIDS Day, SANBS honours the donors whose generosity lights the way for those living with or affected by HIV, showing that even small acts can spark monumental change. “Every donation tells a story of courage and compassion,” said Thandi Mosupye, Senior Manager: Marketing, Communication and Brand, South African National Blood Service.
“Today, we salute every donor who stands for life, transforms hope into action, and champions a future free from fear or stigma.”
