The golf estate was buzzing during this very first walk presented by Cancer.vive and the organisers were overwhelmed by the turnout.
"We want to thank all the wonderful people of George for their support," said Frieda Henning, project manager.
Along the way, sponsors who had bought "hot spots", had all sorts of eats and surprises with which they treated participants. Lots of prizes were also sponsored. Henning thanked Tiger Wheel en Tyre and the Round Table ladies who helped with the organisation and sale of tickets as well as Caltex and Revlon who made it possible for each walker to receive a bandana and a Revlon product. The George Herald was thanked for spreading the word about the event.
Tour on Triumphs
The walk was a fund-raising event for Cancer.vive whose members, a group of cancer survivors and sufferers, will be crossing the country on Triumph motorcycles from 16 to 24 September. Their aim is to raise awareness and educate people around the so-called "shy" cancers. They will also be raising funds and identify and develop support systems for cancer sufferers and the people around them.
The "shy" cancers - breast, cervical, ova-rian, prostate and testicular cancer - are for many difficult to talk about and often go undetected.
Cancer.vive’s trip on their Triumphs will take them to cities, towns and remote and rural villages.
