GEORGE NEWS - A big hearty “Congratulations!” goes to the six matriculants of George who were invited to the annual celebration of the achievements of learners in the National Senior Certificate Examinations.
These matriculants represented not only their schools but also themselves and their families.
The awards ceremony was held this morning at Leeuwenhof, the premier’s residence.
George is proud to say that Esti Louw (Outeniqua HS), Inge Neizel (York High), Christoff Pienaar (York High), Emihle Tsangana (York High), Ivan Badenhorst (Outeniqua HS) and Tycho van Camp (Outeniqua HS) were among the top 40 achievers in the province who were invited to attend the special occasion.
Debbie Schäfer, the Western Cape Minister of Education, said in addition to awarding the top achievers on the provincial level, she was very pleased that government schools have acquitted themselves very well.
“We will also again make Special Ministerial Awards which recognise learners who have achieved their matric pass under very challenging circumstances. The Special Ministerial Awards are very close to my heart, and all district directors had the opportunity to send nominations to us in order to select our very worthy recipients. I have chosen three candidates from those submitted.”
Schäfer sincerely thanked the head of department, Brian Schreuder, and the whole exam team, including Dr Peter Beets, Bertram Loriston, Tina Singh and Blackie Swart, for their tireless work ensuring the exams ran smoothly, despite some of them having to deal with personal tragedies. “Your efforts are appreciated.”
Esti (visual arts), Inge (visual arts), Christoff (computer applications), Ivan (mathematics) and Emihle (computer applications) received awards given to learners with the highest mark in a subject. Each learner received R 6 000 and a certificate.
Ivan and Tycho received awards for best marks in Afrikaans, in the category for best marks in subjects that qualify for a National Senior Certificate (two languages, mathematics and three other subjects excluding life orientation).
Schäfer also acknowledged the hard work that goes into helping these young people every day, and again congratulated all the achievers. “We will keep striving to be number one on the league table, but we are number one in quality.” This after the province dropped from 3rd to 4th place.
She had an encouraging message for those present. “We all face some difficult times ahead, but we should envisage ourselves at the end of it all as the beautiful diamond that did amazingly well under pressure.”
