GEORGE NEWS - Thembalethu schools were not affected by the recent spate of vandalism across the Western Cape during the winter school holidays that cost the Department of Education an estimated R500 000 worth of damages.
The only incident of vandalism that was reported by a school in Thembalethu occurred before the winter break at Tyholorha Primary School, where vandals broke into a classroom and stole learning material. The school has previously reported that it has fell prey to vandalism a number of times and asked for cooperation from the members of the public to help the police to catch these vandals.
Thembalethu Primary School was also affected by this spate of vandalism earlier this year.
After this year's winter school break, it was reported that damages due to vandalism at schools in the Eden and Karoo District amount to an estimated R25 000 to R30 000.
Western Cape Education Minister Debbie Schäfer said communities need to be vigilant regarding activities around their schools and report any suspicious behaviour to the police as soon as possible.
"We also need their assistance in identifying or reporting perpetrators, who often are from within the community," said Schäfer.
