Her dedication has now earned her the national award from Cansa for best patient and client service, and support to patients.
Tersia needs loads of energy for her busy schedule. She not only runs the Irma Bruschi Interim Home, but as a qualified nursing sister and lymphoedema therapist is responsible for the management of the Cancer Care Clinic at 103 Merriman Street.
She was instrumental in establishing the interim home which is a 'home from home' for cancer patients who have to stay over in George while receiving cancer treatment. Tersia has also played a major role in building up the Cancer Care Clinic into a fully fledged centre where a large variety of cancer-related health and support services are rendered.
According to Rita Brock, Cansa regional manager, Tersia consistently goes the extra mile. "Being the only registered nurse on permanent staff in our region places a tremendous amount of pressure on her which she takes in her stride. She rises to the challenge with complete commitment, enthusiasm and professionalism."
This is the second time that this dynamic woman walks away with the award, which she also brought home in 2005.
Tersia has been with Cansa for 11 years and says her motivation is all about fighting cancer and supporting those who receive the de-vastating diagnosis. "For most people, everything shuts down when they get the news. Since counselling is a big part of my work, I can help those going through such trying times."
Second award for Southern Cape
Another Southern Cape resident brought home a Cansa trophy. Heather Timmerman, a volunteer for Cansa since 2003, received the Mariëtte Loots Cancer Winner Merit Award in the Southern Business Unit. She is a cancer survivor and renders invaluable service as a patient care coordinator in Hartenbos. Heather, also a trained nurse, has a soft heart and says it is all about helping people. "I am privileged to be able to go on a journey with cancer patients from diagnosis through all the stages. It is not just about physical care, but also emotional support."
