GEORGE NEWS - A stern warning was issued to a fibre business that held early morning marketing campaigns on the corner of Stockenström and Kerk streets in George last week, much to the chagrin of a nearby resident, Herman Pienaar.
Municipal Director of Protection services, Steven Erasmus, confirmed that Vox Telecom ceased their activities after receiving a stern warning from municipal law enforcement.
A complaint from Pienaar had elicited this warning to the effect that the sales campaigning in a residential area is a violation of the municipal bylaws on advertising.
Without prior permission of the municipality, it is illegal to advertise in any street or municipal land.
"They were loud and started early in the morning. It sounded like a sports event. It was impressive, except if you live near the intersection. We aim to offer the guests in our guest house a chance to sleep in, but it was made impossible by the sales staff who refused to keep their noise within acceptable levels. It was really unpleasant," said Pienaar.
"The municipality's warning in no uncertain terms clarified their position re advertising in residential streets. We should make the large companies and corporate entities aware that we will not accept this behaviour. I am proud to live in an area where there are rules."
Vox Telecom CEO Jacques du Toit said he immediately attended to the complaint when he received it.
"I only wish that Mr Pienaar had contacted me directly to allow us to do something about his problem. That aside, the issue has been addressed and I totally understand that everything is not always acceptable to everyone."
