The mass dog walk on the stunning Wilderness Beach, which has Blue Flag status, is a once-a-year Parks Board approved event and everyone who took part appreciated this unique opportunity to take their dogs onto the renowned shoreline.
Dogs of many varieties enjoyed the social time with other four-legged friends while owners young and old relished the delicious cupcakes, muffins and beverages made by the SPCA volunteers. The GRSPCA is reliant on these generous helpers who are vital to the organisation and the execution of their fundraising events.
The dog show was sponsored by Hills who handed out packets of dog snacks as gifts to the owners of all of the participants in the show and other wonderful prizes to the winners and runners-up in the various amusing categories. Jackie Justino, a representative from Hills, was also kind enough to judge the show along with GRSPCA Manager Frieda Jansen van Rensburg and dog trainer Anthea Fuller. Anthea delighted the spectators with a short display by Wizki, her SA agility, jumping and fly-ball champion. Wizki, who is now 11 years old, was placed 7th in the world championships in 2009.
The highlight of the show was the 'Unique Breeds' class, which is fast becoming the newest trend in dog circles. Each dog of mixed heritage gets given his or her own unique breed name by its owner and the show on Saturday did not disappoint! The winner was Wayne Rodrigues's Lulu who is a 'Pugadore', local SPCA veterinarian Dr Elke Schwellnuss's Lucy was discovered to be a 'Couch-chewing-terrier-hound' and Chris Burlock's Pasha was 'Definitely-not-a-toy-pom' while Gabrielle Seeberger's Miley was a 'Bearded-colligan'. There was also a 'Jorgi, a 'Borgi', a 'Bat-eared whippet' and a 'Labretriever'.
Make sure you don't miss this fabulous event in 2015.
