GEORGE NEWS - The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) will embark on a general strike tomorrow, Wednesday 25 April, over what it terms "the biggest attacks on working-class people, trade unions and the poor" since the end of apartheid.
The nationwide strike will be over the proposed national minimum wage of R20 per hour, amendments to labour laws as well as economic challenges facing workers and the poor.
George Municipality would like to advise the public that as part of the ongoing nationwide strike action, a protest march will take place in George tomorrow.
The march is scheduled to take place from 09:00 - 13:00.
The protestors will march from the old Skatelab building, York Street to the George Municipal Civil Engineering Department (corner of York and Market Street) to hand over a memorandum.
The march will then turn around and proceed back down York Street, turning left into Nelson Mandela Boulevard towards the Department of Labour. From there they will proceed to Thembalehtu where they will disperse.
Please note no roads will be closed during the march.
Important notice
Fake WhatsApp messages are doing the rounds indicating that people must stay at home and keep their children from school. Please note this is an organised protest march with marshalls. Law enforcement and SAPS will be present at all times.
Western Cape schools open
Schools across the Western Cape will remain open on Wednesday 25 April despite the planned strike action.
There are a number of rumours and fake news posts doing the rounds on social media claiming that schools will shut until Wednesday 2 May. These are not true and parents, learners and members of the public are urged to not share this fake news.
