GEORGE NEWS - The annual Orchid Spring Show of the Orchid Society of the Southern Cape was held from 13 to 15 September in the Presbyterian church hall in Caledon Street. Once again this highlight for lovers and collectors of these exotic blooms drew throngs of visitors from the entire region.
It seems that the show gets more popular every year and the organisers estimated about 300 visitors showed up on each of the three days. So - those who haven't experienced this event, should really make a note for next year.
A fascinating collection of plants were on show and the size, fragrance and sheer quantity of these delicate orchids were enough to turn any head, even tempting those who don't have green fingers into becoming a collector.
Children's drawings depicting orchids of all shapes and sizes in vibrant colours were exhibited and there were information boards on the different countries and regions these plants originated from.
For those who get bitten by the bug, there is always a plant table with a wide variety of orchids at reasonable prices. The good news is that friendly and expert growers are ready with advice. Some varieties are more hardy and can be planted outside in a suitable spot.
