GEORGE NEWS - Our heroes at the NSRI Wilderness are renowned for saving human lives in and around the water, but sometimes their calling goes beyond human needs.
On Saturday 19 March, NSRI Wilderness was dispatched to Kleinkrantz beach to help a couple whose dog had collapsed while on a walk.
According to NSRI Wilderness station commander Mike Vonk, they were quite far from the car park when their beloved Rex collapsed due to a long-term illness.
"The local couple, who have not lived in the area for very long, reached out to the Barnyard kennels for advice and staff at the kennels suggested calling the NSRI. On receiving the call, without hesitation, a crew was activated and our rescue vehicle responded to the closest access point," said Vonk.
NSRI crew members found the elderly dog unable to continue the walk. Rex was assessed and secured onto a basket stretcher to carry him to the car park, from where he was taken to a local vet.
"The couple were grateful for the assistance and their other three dogs displayed visible concern for their ill family member. The compassion displayed was heartfelt by all involved," said Vonk.
According to the vet, Rex's long-term illness appears to be the cause of his collapse. Rex is now recovering in the comfort of his own home.
Local NSRI members assisted the couple to carry Rex from the beach.
