GEORGE NEWS - The George Business Chamber serves as a catalyst for unlocking business opportunities across all sectors. That is the message of Sonia van der Merwe, the new manager of the George Business Chamber.
The 35-year old Van der Merwe has been living in George since 2007 and her CV includes a stint as account executive for Algoa FM in the Garden Route.
In 2020 she had to relocate to Oudtshoorn where she joined the De Beer Group and managed 10 restaurant outlets, overseeing sales, marketing, human resources, accounting, operations and customer service.
She has a passion for business operating improvement, collaboration and networking. "I have always been fascinated by how businesses can optimise their processes, collaborate with others and create value for their customers and communities," she told George Herald. "I enjoy working with a diverse and dynamic team of professionals who share my vision and enthusiasm. I am constantly looking for new ways to learn, grow and innovate in my field."
According to her, the George Business Chamber's primary focus is to support and nurture businesses through networking events, ensuring their sustainable growth.
"Our vision is to foster an inclusive economy that embraces every facet of the business landscape, including NPOs, start-ups, informal enterprises, township businesses, small and medium enterprises, and corporates. Together, we contribute to the vibrant business community within the George municipal area."
Asked about the future of the George Business Chamber, she said, "It’s both a privilege and a pleasure to be welcomed by the existing affiliates of the George Business Chamber, and for them to entrust me with this new role.
"We will continue our valued partnership with our existing affiliates, some of which have walked the journey with us since 2002. As our world rapidly evolves, so must our business practices. I am passionate about driving transformation within the George Business Chamber, and I believe that together, we can create a thriving business community for all.
She wants the Chamber to embrace fresh ideas and innovative strategies. By actively involving the youth and supporting emerging businesses, they can pave the way for a dynamic and resilient business landscape.
"I envision a network where established businesses join hands with newcomers. By fostering partnerships, we can collectively contribute to the growth of our local economy. Our actions today impact tomorrow. Let's champion sustainable practices, ensuring that our community thrives for generations to come.
"I would like to personally invite you to connect with us at info@georgechamber.co.za. Together, we can build a stronger, more vibrant business network in greater George."
