GEORGE NEWS - Deputy Mayor Raybin Figland welcomed the military's Trans Enduro teams at the Garden Route Mall on Tuesday 30 November. The groups lined up in the parking area in preparation for the next part of their race.
The Trans Enduro is a military tradition dating back to the 1980' in which students from the South African Military run, cycle and sail from Port Elizabeth to the Military Academy in Saldanha.
The event is supported by student-based logistics and administration teams and is complemented by a strong community outreach programme and fundraising efforts in the towns they visit.
Figland said the city is honoured to be part of such a worthy event. "The teams should enjoy everything George has to offer, especially the beautiful landscapes, ocean and tourist attractions." He praised the students for running charity initiatives in each town they visit and thanked them for making a difference in other people's lives.
The Military Academy officially launched this year's Trans Enduro in Nelson Mandela Bay last Friday, 26 November.
The teams' outreaches in the towns they visit are part of their Masiza project, which sees some doing tasks like painting, cleaning, donating and other forms of community assistance while others promote the cause and do fundraising for the community.
The groups will reach Saldanha Bay on Saturday 4 December and the event will be officially closed.
The Trans Enduro military students line up outside the Garden Route Mall to get started on the next leg of the race while other students stay in town to do charity work.
