GEORGE NEWS - A wanted suspect, Kenneth Gainsford (54), who has been on the run for nearly a decade, was arrested at his house in Wilderness on Thursday morning, 20 January, at about 10:00.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson, Capt Malcolm Pojie, the suspect, who was wanted in connection with the theft of Krugerrands to the value of R7,8-million, has been on the run since 2012.
Gainsford made his first appearance in the Knysna Magistrate's Court on Friday 21 January.
"Members followed up on information following the issuing of a warrant for his arrest by the Knysna Magistrate's Court," said Pojie.
"The theft was allegedly perpetrated between May 2011 and 09 March 2012, when the owner of the Krugerrands gave the commodity to the suspect for safekeeping. At the time the suspect was working at a bank in Knysna and offered to safeguard the Krugerrands.
When she asked for the return of the commodity, he refused to give it back. Subsequent to his refusal and the disappearance of the Krugerrands, the complainant laid a criminal complaint of theft against him."
Gainsford remains in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for later today, Thursday 27 January, for a formal bail application.
