GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - In a magical display of nature's wonders, beaches around the South Cape coast recently transformed into illuminated wonderlands as bioluminescent organisms put on a breathtaking show.
Locals were treated to a mesmerizing spectacle.
The phenomenon came with the recent red tide on Garden Route coastline over the weekend, and is caused by the presence of tiny organisms known as dinoflagellates. These organisms taint the surface water red/orange and can result in bioluminescence at night, which showcased waves in an ethereal blue glow.
Witnessing this bioluminescence is a rare delight, and our community has been buzzing with excitement.
Scientists explain that these bioluminescent organisms emit light when disturbed, creating a stunning visual display in response to the motion of waves or footsteps in the sand.
It's a natural light show that adds a touch of magic to our familiar coastal landscapes.
Local beachgoers have been sharing their awe-inspiring experiences on social media with photos capturing the beauty of the glowing shores.
