GEORGE NEWS - Local runners and road cyclists are invited to pre-register and join the South African Military Academy on part of their annual TransEnduro exercise along the Garden Route in November.
The TransEnduro is a military tradition dating back to the 1980s in which students from the academy participate in a two week, multi-disciplinary exercise with charity outreach.
A total of 180 first and second year students will run, cycle and sail from Port Elizabeth to the Military Academy in Saldanha from 22 November to 2 December.
The event is supported by student-based logistics and administration teams.
It is complemented by a strong community outreach programme and fundraising efforts in the towns they visit.
The teams will arrive in George from Plettenberg Bay on 27 November and leave for Still Bay the next day. Running, cycling and sailing take place concurrently.
The 10km road run through George promises to be a treat: runners will join in army-style singing aimed at having fun and gaining exposure for its fundraising.
Interested runners should contact the candidate officer, Bulelani Maguma, on 072 281 6143 or magumab@yahoo.com.
Entries are limited, so book a spot as soon as possible.
Cyclists can join the TransEnduro students on a 50km (100km return) stretch from George to Mossel Bay along the N2.
They can turn back from where the cycling team proceeds to Still Bay.
Individuals and teams wanting to join the cycling team will have to pre-register by 15 November by contacting the candidate officer, Puseletso Mathibela, on 073 137 6697 or puseletso.mathibela.62@gmail.com.
No registration will be possible on the day.
Because running and cycling take place simultaneously, participants can only register for one activity.
Anyone wanting to participate in other sections between Port Elizabeth and Saldanha can enquire on the numbers listed above.
Traffic and related arrangements around the event in George will be announced closer to the time.
