GEORGE NEWS AND VIDEO - Uitenhage’s Goliath twins Carlene and Caylene (20), landed up studying in George by default.
"We had our hearts set on furthering our education at NMU in Port Elizabeth but due to the fees must fall protests we changed course and instead headed for George," said Carlene.
Today they feel that it is the best decision they could have made. "George is the ideal size town to study in, it is not a city, yet with a functioning infrastructure and a growing economy it offers students the opportunity of finding their niche that can complement one’s studies," said Caylene.
Being in unfamiliar territory the twins soon realised that they would have to become part of the community as having a qualification without a strong CV was a recipe for disaster in today’s competitive workplace.
Together they consciously took a decision to volunteer for every event at eta.
"We manned water points for road racers and mountain bike trails on both sides of the Outeniqua Mountains, took to the icy waters at the Polar Bear Plunge, pushed wheelchairs for those less fortunate in the OCC and met the Springboks and their management team at their recent training camp in Plett.
"It is important to put yourself out there and expose yourself to environments that might possibly enhance your skills like confidence, communication, teamwork and responsibility within your desired field of occupation, especially if you’re a student," Carlene said.
By volunteering both of them have landed part-time jobs, which goes a far way to making them even more independent.

Caylene is pleased that her CV with favourable recommendation letters from the places where she has volunteered is almost ready for the market place.
"Many young people turn away from volunteering, because the task is portrayed as if it requires too much time and a lot of hard work. But it will help you to stand out, as it allowed us to network and meet new people. Every day George feels more like home." Carlene concluded.
