GEORGE NEWS - The Hasso Plattner Trust's Inkcubeko Youth and Science centre in Thembalethu was officially opened on Wednesday 21 November.
The centre, a project of the Isisombululo Community Improvement programme, is in Ngcakani Street next to MM Mateza Primary School and serves the youth of Thembalethu and the greater Garden Route region.
Dr Kristina Plattner, member of the Hasso Plattner Foundation, said that the centre operates in a safe space where the young people can explore how the world around them works by igniting curiosity and interest in science, technology, engineering, arts, maths and innovation.
"This centre will serve as a beacon for youth empowerment, community development and social cohesion by promoting healthy culture and practices through youth orientated projects." The Hasso Plattner Foundation has been working with the University of Cape Town and the department of health for over 15 years.
Centre manager Nadine Nortier said that the centre is the dream of Dr Hasso Plattner. "He wanted to host a space that will incorporate youth in health, recreation and academics, and this is what the Inkcubeko Centre represents."
The youth section is a vibrant recreational and learning area that aims to transform the lives of the youth to embrace hope for a better future.
The activities offered range from chess, entrepreneur and wellness clubs to job readiness workshops.
In the science centre the youth can explore interactive scientific exhibits, enabling them to discover and experience complex concepts in a fun, easy-to-understand and memorable way. Learners can benefit from workshops, curriculum and extracurricular support as well as science clubs and a homework hub.
