GEORGE NEWS - The roles have been reversed. The Lions need our help. The premises that currently houses the Lions Assistance and Distribution Services project (Lads), on the old McCain factory site, has been sold and the Lions need to find another site.
"The Lads project allows for receiving, sorting, storing and distribution of clothing and other items. Sadly, the use of this donated facility has come to an end. We have to vacate by the middle of February 2020, leaving very limited choices for this critical project," says Carl van Blerk, chairperson of the Eden Lions' Lads project.
George is fortunate to have two Lions clubs serving the needs of the local community - needs that increase from year to year as the economy becomes more challenging and poverty is growing.
Just as relevant is the incredible work done by the members of the Lions clubs during times of disaster.
Lions have led many of the disaster relief campaigns in our region, especially in connection with the devastating fires over the past few years.
Various items are stored at Lads.
In order to continue serving the community in times of need, a new facility of at least 200m² to 300m² is needed.
"This can either be a sponsored facility - as we do not receive funding other than that which is raised through community projects - or a number of businesses can pledge a monthly financial contribution to cover the rental," says Van Blerk.
"Although times are tough and this may be a big thing to ask, we need to remember that the financial crisis is greater for those in need, and so it is even more important now, to support those who serve the needy."
At R2 000 a month, only five or six pledges will be needed to keep Lads alive.
"If you can help by offering less, please do still contact the Lions - every rand will take us closer to the goal," says Van Blerk.
If you would like to view the current Lads facility to see the great work being done, with a view to support this cause, please contact Van Blerk on 082 826 0731.
