Many of the new Grade 1s have already had a taste of school as most of them have been in Grade R, which is situated on the school grounds, or at a crèche nearby.
Entering 'big school' can, however, still be pretty daunting as from now on a school uniform and proper school rules apply.
Some of the Grade 1s looked quite comfortable as they were once again united with their Grade R friends who they have not seen for six weeks, while others were already making new friends.
Tinie Gericke, headmaster of Denneoord Primary School, said they received many enrolments of both Grade R and Grade 1 this week. "Even today we are writing in learners."
Hibernia Primary's Headmaster Wilbur Pedro said that he is optimistic and positive for the future as long as the parents realise that education is a long, demanding journey that must be accompanied by commitment from them as well as the children. "This year's Grade 1s will only matriculate in 2025."
Peter Louw, headmaster of Parkdene High School, confirmed that all textbooks and incidentals have been delivered. "We are ready despite the challenges that face the school. Hopefully, we will soon be in line for a school hall so that we do not have to give-up classrooms when learners must write their exams. This really disrupts teaching."
Notwithstanding the odd tear, hundreds of Grade 1s have commenced on what is commonly known as 'the best days of your life'.
