Update
GEORGE NEWS - The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment (DFFE) has confirmed that the Pacaltsdorp Secondary School did not get permission from the department to fell the yellowwood tree that was cut down to make way for a new fence and electric gate.
George Herald recently reported on the tree that had been planted on the school grounds 25 years ago by members of the school's Green Club and a former teacher, Desmond Sauer. The cutting of the tree had caused a stir among environmentally conscious residents.
DFFE communications director Albi Modise said the matter was reported on 28 October by the municipality and an investigation has started.
"If, during the investigations, it is established that the provisions of the National Forest Act, No 84 of 1998 were not complied with, the department is legally bound to instate a criminal offence which may result in those who contravened the act facing criminal charges. The department can still consider an offset option through which a culprit is requested or instructed to plant a number of indigenous trees to compensate for the loss of the yellowwood."
Unathi Booi, a spokesperson for the Education Department earlier said no instructions had been given by the department or school management for the tree to be removed. "We will cooperate with any investigation going forward."
