GEORGE NEWS - A female biker from George who suffered serious injuries during an accident with a car in Courtenay Street four weeks ago, is still recovering.
She suffered six broken ribs, a punctured lung, a broken collar bone, damage to her liver and a head injury after a white Hyundai Atos turned in front of her at the traffic light where Mitchell Street crosses Courtenay about 18:20 on Wednesday 25 October.
In CCTV video footage of the accident that George Herald was privy to, it can be seen how the biker crosses the green traffic light as the vehicle approaches from the direction of KFC.
When she realises that the car is going to turn in front of her, she tries to take evasive action but still hits the side of the car.
The biker was transported to hospital from where she was discharged after two weeks. She even spent her birthday in the hospital.
"My bike is a write-off and I'm still in some pain. Hopefully I will be able to return to work soon. As for spending my birthday in hospital, its okay, I'm blessed to have had that birthday," she said.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies confirmed the incident.
"George Detectives are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving. No arrest has been made. The investigation into this matter is ongoing," said Spies.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be referred to the National Prosecuting Authority for a decision whether to prosecute or not.
Upon a question as to why the police officer who attended the scene allegedly did not do a breathalyser test on either of the drivers, Spies said that it remains the prerogative of the police official attending to a scene to determine what steps need to be taken based on his or her observations at the time of the incident.
