GEORGE NEWS - During a recent unannounced visit to Pacaltsdorp Clinic, Western Cape Health minister Dr Nomafrench Mbombo said plans to expand the facility are afoot. An additional wing will be added at a cost of R10-million.
She said she had been informed that the development should start by September 2019, but the timelines of the project are subject to certain processes of the National Health Department. No extra staff will be appointed.
She said the clinic was built in 1981 and is in dire need of extension in order to accommodate a growing population. She used the opportunity to engage with patients and to listen to their frustrations.
According to Nadia Ferreira, communications officer for the department's Garden Route district, construction will take about nine months. She said about 250 patients are treated daily at the facility - about 4 500 monthly.
The promised project had first been announced way back in 2013 by the then Western Cape health minister Theuns Botha. At the time he had also paid the clinic a surprise visit.
