GEORGE NEWS - Soul Food regional manager Esra Isaacs travelled far and wide last weekend to ensure that local communities were able to fill many empty tummies on the United Nations' World Food Day, Saturday 16 October. But he doesn't only do this on high days and holidays.
Isaacs told George Herald on Tuesday that when a person focuses so much on the hungry and less fortunate, you get into a space where you just want to go into areas as much and as widely as possible.
"I just returned from homes where you can actually see the relief in the recipients' eyes, not knowing what's in my vehicle, but they know that hope has arrived. Working directly with the communities is such a blessing because we can see the appreciation for our work on a daily basis."
His region includes the greater George and Mossel Bay areas including Little Brak and Great Brak.
Isaacs is one of seven Soul Food regional managers countrywide who ensure that they are able to feed their dependents through making food deliveries to soup kitchens, feeding schemes, and other registered entities that need assistance.
The Soul Food representatives are easily spotted in their red branded Soul Food trucks, and each regional manager is supported by established businesses and retail outlets within their own region. Locally, Checkers and Shoprite are incredible supporters of Isaacs and he sincerely appreciates their contributions.
In addition to these invaluable relationships, Soul Food is grateful for all monetary donations as well as regular donations from the public.
New ventures include the Soul Seed project, which distributes seed kits to communities so they are not so dependent on food handouts.
The Soul Food station at Kleinkrantz was also paid a visit over the weekend.
Power porridge
This month Soul Food introduced its new nutritious, vitamin-fortified POWA Pack Instant Porridge parcels.
These 1kg easy-to-make instant porridge packs will be handed out to ECDs and schools, ensuring a nutritious breakfast for learners.
"Feeding school children and communities along with providing nutritious, healthy meals are our core values," says Rev Brent Chalmers of the Soul Food managing trustees. "We are now serving over 1,5 million meals every month. I am very proud of our hard-working regional managers, as it is their dedication that makes a difference in so many people's lives."
