"Without provocation they attacked me, biting my shoe. My dog, Tommy, a labrador cross, came to protect me. In a flash he was mauled to death and carried off by the pit bulls and dropped in the next street."
Mofammere said that when he went to collect his dog's body, a stranger approached him saying that it wasn't the first time that the two pit bulls have attacked a neighbourhood dog. He neglected to take the man's details.
Tony Manchest, owner of the American pit bulls who stay two blocks from where the incident took place, said that on Tuesday his neighbour told him that his dogs were out. "I saw that a Vibracrete slab had been pushed out and I assumed that they had escaped through the hole in the wall."
When asked for comment about the incident, Manchest looked surprise and said he was not aware that his dogs had attacked someone else's dog. "I apologise, I am really sorry. I keep my dogs securely in my yard. They just got out. I am really sorry. As you can see they are well cared for and my yard is secure."
Inspector Gerda Reynders, from the SPCA, is investigating the matter and will issue a report on the incident.
