GEORGE NEWS - Theft of motor vehicles decreased with about 29% compared with the same period last year. So says Southern Cape police spokesperson, Capt Malcolm Pojie, after recent complaints of an increase in these types of crimes in George.
"According to our crime threat-and-pattern analysis, there is no increase in theft of, or theft out of motor vehicles, as recorded or reported over the last quarter (July to September 2020)," he says.
Contrary to the assumption, these crimes all reflect a decline, some significantly so.
"Theft out of motor vehicles reflects a decrease of about 12% compared with the same period the previous year. For September alone we have experienced a decline of 23%. In fact, all major crime categories have shown a decline," says Pojie.
He confirms that the decline can be attributed to the lockdown and the strategic deployment of operational police members and force multipliers such as the South African National Defence Force and traffic and law enforcement agencies.
"The contribution of our community partners such as the community police forum, neighbourhood watches and crime sector forums, is also commendable."
