GEORGE NEWS - Military veterans from various organisations and units were joined by spouses and friends at the Outeniqua Moth Shellhole in George on Saturday 6 May for a parade and wreath-laying ceremony to remember those who lost their lives during the South African Border War.
The war was fought from 26 August 1966 to 21 March 1990. The Southern Cape Veteran parade was represented by 12 organisations, one of which was the South African Special Forces Association (Sasfa), that presented Brigadier General (retired) John More with the Sasfa Merit Award Silver for his long and distinguished career as a special forces operator.
The award was presented by General (retired) Dan Lambrecht, who is the current national president of Sasfa.
The Special Forces started off with only 11 men in 1972, and under the command of Col (retired) JD Breytenbach, these men, known as the "dirty dozen", set the ethos and the level of professionalism for the units that would become known as the recces.
Both More and Lambrecht were part of the original 11 men.
