Angelino (Vic) van der Merwe, aged 65, was on his way from Glentana to school on Friday 4 November at about 6:55 when his motorcycle collided with a Volvo which was crossing the R102 in front of him. According to emergency services, the impact flung him almost 20m and he sustained multiple serious injuries. Paramedics started treatment within minutes of the collision, but the condition of the injured Van der Merwe deteriorated rapidly and a decision was made for rapid transport to the George Mediclinic. Unfortunately the injuries were so severe that he died shortly after his arrival at the hospital.
According to Capt Malcolm Pojie, communications officer of the Southern Cape SAPS, a case of culpable homicide has been opened and he requests any eye witnesses to urgently contact the investigating officer WO Allie du Plessis at 044 8034 762.
Much loved teacher
Mr. Tony Dingle, headmaster of York High School where Vic van der Merwe was the head of the Maths Department is still dealing with the loss the school has suffered and wishes to convey the following message to all:
"The school learnt on Friday morning that Mr Vic van der Merwe passed away after a collision between his motorbike and a car. The school is in shock - we have lost a friend, a colleague, a mentor, a teacher and a father figure. Vic was a wonderful, kind and generous man who positively influenced many pupils left in his care throughout his teaching career. This is a sad day for York - he was much loved by all who knew him. Our condolences to his wife Rosa, and his children Emile and Angelique."
York learners formed a memorial circle on the sports grounds and also had an assembly on Friday to pay respects and mourn their loss. A message received from Simone Subke, a Gr 11 learner at York High, reads: "On 4 November a dear friend and teacher of mine was in a motorbike accident. Mr Van der Merwe was an excellent teacher and even better person. I want his family and George to know how much he meant to us."
Vic van der Merwe is survived by his wife Rosa and two children. His funeral will take place at the Dutch Reformed Church Sinksabrug, tomorrow at 11:00.
Deputy Mayor of George, Daniel Maritz arrives at the scene of the fatal accident on the R102 next to the George airport.
Locals are up in arms about the provincial government’s apparent inability to address this dangerous intersection.
