GEORGE NEWS - A double murder following a bundu court in Zone 8 and the murder of a teenage boy in Zone 6 led to the arrest of 10 people in Thembalethu this week.
Bundu court
Two men were killed in alleged bundu court justice in Mandela Village informal settlement (Gushi Ndoda) late last Wednesday evening, 7 November.
The victims were accused of breaking into a woman's house where they allegedly stole clothing and other items.
The bodies of Heinrich Smith (32) and Songeza Mamani (34) were found early Thursday morning by police after a resident on his way home from night shift, found one of the bodies next to his shack.
It is believed the two men were beaten to death with sjamboks and sticks. One of the deceased was found in the road, while the other was discovered near some shacks not far from the scene.
Police conducted an operation in connection with the murders on Monday, which led to the arrest of nine suspects - eight men and a woman. They will appear in the George Magistrate's Court tomorrow, Friday 16 November.
More arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
Any witnesses or anyone with information are requested to contact Constable X Tukulula on 044 802 8930.
Teenager
In another incident at 20:00 on Sunday 11 November, a 16-year-old boy was killed in an apparent gang-related incident. One suspect (19) has been arrested.
Both the deceased and the suspect are learners at Imizamo Yethu Secondary School.
It is alleged that the deceased was involved in a fight with the suspect and another young man when the deceased stabbed one of the men.
The deceased ran into a house where the two men cornered him. He was stabbed twice, in the chest and head. The teenager died on the scene.
Colonel Douw Herbst, Thembalethu police station commander, yesterday said they are establishing street committees in Mandela Village in an effort to work more closely with the community to curb crime.
"We warn residents not to take the law into their own hands. We will have no choice but to arrest them and bring them before a court of law. The community must trust the police to do their job."
