GEORGE NEWS - While the IEC has released the final results of most municipal areas in the Western Cape, only the results of 47 382 of the national ballot papers and 35 989 of the provincial ballot papers in the George Municipal area have officially been released by 16:00 this afternoon.
The DA showed a comfortable lead, but as it is unclear which voting stations are still outstanding, it would be too early for the party to start celebrating.
The IEC figures showed that 55,89% of local voters opted for the DA nationally and provincially 61,9% supported the blue party.
In the 2014 elections 66 403 valid provincial votes were counted in the George Municipal area and 67 784 nationally.
The Western Province provincial electoral officer, Courtney Sampson said that George is one of a number of municipalities where the results are being delayed.
He was not prepared to expand on the reasons for the delays in George, Knysna, Bitou, Stellenbosch, Breede River Valley and the City of Cape Town. He was hopeful that the final count would be available at 12:00 on Friday.
