GEORGE NEWS - The 21-year-old Nelson Mandela University (NMU) student Fandiswa Mthonti, who is charged with the murder of a fellow student (23) in Le Vallia on Sunday 17 November, appeared in the George Magistrate's Court on Tuesday 19 November.
The case was postponed to tomorrow, 22 November.
The police have not officially released the deceased's name as family members have yet to positively identify the body. It is believed her mother arrived from East London in George late Tuesday evening.
Police earlier said initial investigations suggest that an altercation occurred between the two women at their student residence in Mountainview Crescent.
When police arrived at the scene around 19:00, they discovered the victim with multiple stab wounds.
According to available information, the victim was stabbed six times with a knife. Paramedics declared her dead at the scene. The suspect was apprehended at the scene.
The motive for the incident is still under investigation.
George Herald reached out to the family for comment, but they declined.
In a statement earlier this week, NMU communications manager Milisa Piko said that it is with deep sadness and an overwhelming sense of loss that they share the heart-wrenching news of the tragic passing of one of their students.
The campus' student housing department was informed of a stabbing incident shortly after the murder.
"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family, friends, and all those touched by this immense loss. We stand by you in this time of mourning and remain committed to offering all possible support and care."
Piko added that counselling and psychosocial support have been arranged with Emthonjeni Counselling services for affected students. Students are encouraged to make use of these services to come through this difficult period.
Students are currently writing their final exams.
"As we navigate this painful moment, we request that the university community come together in compassion and strength, in memory of a fellow student whose life was cut far too short.
The university, particularly the George Campus community, extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased student.
"Our thoughts and prayers are also with the family of the student implicated in this incident."
