GEORGE NEWS - Mobility Month started on a serious note on 1 October when representatives of the Western Cape Government (WCG), the police, and the City of Cape Town discussed extortion within the public transport sector in the province; a gnawing issue that is an ugly reality in George as well.
Authorities encourage residents to call and report extortion on the dedicated police toll-free number, 0800 31 44 44.
"Extortion is a crime gaining in prominence nationally, and unfortunately the Western Cape has not been spared the scourge.
The WCG is working with SAPS, Leap officers, municipalities, and other stakeholders to act very firmly against extortionists. We have been encouraged by the progress we have seen, but there is still a long road ahead of us," said Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety Anroux Marais.
At home, big focus was placed on learner transport operations and joint operation roadblocks.
Focus on safer roads in George
Mobility Month kicked off in George with a renewed focus on road safety and crucial issues such as visibility, drinking and walking, distracted walking, and the dangers of using cellphones and headphones while on the move.
Partnering with local law enforcement agencies, the campaign will target key areas throughout the month, including driver and vehicle fitness, alcohol enforcement, and learner transport operations.
Public transport and freight operations, speed monitoring on highways, and inter-provincial corridor checks will also be prioritised.
