GEORGE NEWS - Watsons Meat became the largest producer of pork in the Southern Cape, with a production of 12 000 quality pork carcasses per year, since their takeover in June of Tolman's pig farming in Mossel Bay.
A major reason for Watsons expanding their pig farming is to ensure the continuous supply of quality pork cuts and products to their customers at the best price. An added benefit is the ability to find the origin of products more accurately.
Supreme pork products
The pigs receive specially formulated nutrition, provided by the international feeding company, De Heus, to ensure a high quality of meat. With top breeding stock from the USA, supreme pork is produced to meet our customers' needs.
Due to the increasingly competitive business environment, quality, hygiene and service have become increasingly important. It is Watsons' mission to be the market leader by providing a wide range of high quality pork products to its customers at the most competitive prices possible.
The pork carcasses are largely processed into products such as bacon, ham, gammon, cold meats, salamis and a wide variety of fresh and cooked sausages.
Top score in food audits
Watsons has been undergoing rigorous food safety audits since 2013 and is thus one of the small number of selected food producers in the Southern Cape who comply with the strict rules and expectations of the national and international supermarket groups, catering firms and hotel groups.
A pass rate of 80% must be obtained to provide to these groups. Watsons achieved 94% with the last audit in August this year.
Today's market is becoming increasingly more demanding with its regulation through legislation. The extent to which the government will regulate the legislation will have a decisive influence on what the food industry will look like in a few years from now.
Watsons strives to ensure quality from the farm to the table and to give customers peace of mind, which is why Watsons will endeavor to produce more pork on its farms.
