GEORGE BUSINESS NEWS - Henque Waste is a large recycling company consisting of branches all around the Western Cape and still expanding. They take recycling very seriously and work hard to instil the importance of recycling.
Here in George, they have been making a name for themselves for the last six years, and this has created jobs for 38 permanent staff members as well as over 200 entrepreneurs who create their own income by collecting and delivering material.
Douw Bezuidenhout says, “We have permanent workers who receive a monthly salary, but there are also sorters and collectors who work for themselves. We gave them the option to either get a basic salary or work hard and generate their own monthly income.”
Henque Waste takes in glass, boxes, paper, plastic and all other forms of recyclables, whether there is a market for it or not. People bring waste in from the streets and the company also sends out its vehicles, for free, to pick up waste at shopping centres and businesses.
“We don’t want these items to land at the landfill sites, because at the end of the day it is the municipality’s problem and then the taxpayer’s problem - and it becomes one vicious circle,” says Douw.
They have contracts with bigger factories to deliver the waste they process to these companies. He explains that boxes get baled and the paper first gets shredded in case it contains sensitive information before going to the baling process.
They process the plastic themselves and they use a huge crusher for glass. Henque Waste now has free recycling bags available at their depot for the public to help people get into the habit of recycling.
