GEORGE NEWS - Police are investigating a fatal New Year’s Day crash in George, while several serious criminal cases – including murder and high-profile court matters – are moving through the local justice system.
From a deadly collision in Le Vallia to ongoing murder trials and upcoming bail hearings, law enforcement remains under pressure as the year begins.
Man dies in New Year’s car accident
A 36-year-old man died following a collision between a Toyota and Isuzu bakkie in Park Street in Le Vallia at about 22:00 on New Year’s Day.
According to the Southern Cape Police’s spokesperson, Warrant Officer Chris Spies, the officers found one occupant seriously injured, and they were later declared dead. The collision’s cause is still under investigation, and a culpable homicide docket has been opened.
The police urge anyone with information to come forward.
Rosemoor man in court for murder
A 36-year-old man from Rosemoor appeared in the George Magistrate’s Court on Monday 29 December on a murder charge for an incident on Christmas Day.
Medowaan Goldman stands accused of stabbing Castro Biko to death with a knife in the street where Goldman lives. He was arrested on Boxing Day, remains in custody and will make his next court appearance on 7 February.
Lifman murder case continues
A new bail application for the two men accused of murdering alleged underworld figure Mark Lifman is set to take place on 14 and 15 January.
The accused, Johannes ‘Jakes’ Jacobs and Gert ‘Johnny’ Bezuidenhout, made their previous appearance in the Thembalethu Regional Court on Wednesday 10 December.
They were arrested in November 2024 after Lifman had been gunned down in the Garden Route Mall’s parking area. The pair were later apprehended near Uniondale in what is believed to have been their getaway vehicle. During their previous court appearance, their defence attorneys raised concerns that the men had been kept in solitary confinement for more than a year.
Joan Singrew-moordsaak weer Maandag voor die hof
Die moordsaak rondom Joan Singrew (53) van Rosemoor hervat weer op Maandag 12 Januarie in die rondgaande hooggeregshof in George.
Verlede jaar is getuienis aangehoor oor die dag van Singrew se verdwyning. Haar liggaam is op 25 November 2024 in die bosse naby Charlesstraat in Groot-Brakrivier gevind.
Haar man, Duane Singrew (47), en sy neef, Heinrich Jumat (46), staan tereg op aanklagte van onder meer moord, ontvoering en dwarsboming van die gereg.
