Update
GEORGE NEWS - The Garden Route's residents and visitors only have a few more days to enjoy the double-lane traffic flow in the Kaaimans Pass before the roadworks resume on Monday 12 January.
Construction work on the Seven Passes Road resumed on Wednesday 7 January. Traffic accommodation teams have reinstated signage and recommenced construction activities.
A stop-and-go traffic system will be implemented on the Seven Passes Road between Nelson Mandela University and George.
Contractors working on the N2 upgrade between George and Wilderness had shut down for the December holidays from Friday 12 December, and the machinery will be repositioned from today, Thursday 8 January.
During the holiday period, the motorists were mostly spoilt with the double lanes between George and Wilderness and functional traffic circles, despite some minor headaches.
The double lane will soon disap-pear, and drivers will once again face the familiar single lanes in the Kaaimans Pass. Major roadworks are currently under way along the N2, including the Victoria Bay and Farhills Hotel turn-offs, the Kaaimans Pass, the N2 through Wilderness and the Kleinkrantz turn-off, as part of Sanral's multimillion-rand upgrade.
The project, due for completion later this year, involves widening the road to a dual carriageway, constructing new traffic circles at Victoria Bay and on the George Road, and stabilising steep slopes around the Kaaimans Gorge, an area prone to erosion and landslides.
While these upgrades aim to im-prove safety and traffic flow in the long term, motorists should expect ongoing delays, reduced speed limits and intermittent lane closures until the project is finished.
