Update
GEORGE NEWS - Residents and commuters remain frustrated as roadworks on the Kaaiman’s Pass continue, with the only alternative route, the Seven Passes road, also closed to all traffic.
Many in the community have called for clarity on when the passes will reopen.
The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure has confirmed that both Montagu Pass and Seven Passes remain closed until further notice.
Officials have expressed concern that members of the public are ignoring closure signs, with reports of barriers being removed to access the roads. Authorities emphasise that the closures apply to all road users, including vehicles, motorbikes, bicycles, pedestrians, and even horse riders.
“The damage to these routes is not always visible from the surface,” said Jandré Bakker, Director of Operational Support at the Western Cape Government’s Department of Infrastructure.
“Using the roads in their current state could cause further failures, which would in turn delay the reopening.”
At this stage, no timelines for the reopening of Montagu Pass or Seven Passes can be confirmed.
George Herald will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
