These poets are of the opinion that many teenagers have talents they do not recognise and there is seldom anybody that they can turn to when they need to talk. "We believe that these youths need a mentor to give them direction or give them a platform to explore their talents. Yet when they do wrong, there is always someone there to judge them," said Kraai.
They see their poetry as a tool of change with which they can share a positive message with the youth. The idea is to recite poetry on the streets of Thembalethu sending out their message. They started writing poetry at primary school and during high school performed at schools, churches, fun fairs and the George Museum.
After matric they lost contact and Ladyblaq moved to Johannesburg, but still continued with what she knew best - poetry. Ladyblaq performed at various venues and events in Johannesburg, such as Rosebank College, Johannesburg City College, Soweto Festival 2011, the University of Johannesburg and Word and Sound Baseline in Newtown. She performed with the likes of Lebo Mashile, Afurakan and King Nova.
Initiating poetry sessions at Ko'Spotong in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, she took over well known Sowetan artist K4's mix tape launch at Roots Restaurant in Soweto, performing her piece Jozi Maboneng and Ndoda ndinguMfazi.
Now back in George, she works and performs with LadyK in and around the area. They have been heard on EDENfm reciting a poem that they collaborated on entitled African Pride. Their next performance is on 28 July in Thembalethu at Phelandaba's Red Door Restaurant from 16:00 to 19:00. During this poetry get together they will be joined by other local poets, Soulutter, Ntethoyabantu, Rain, Siwe, Ricky, Mxhosa, Lonies, Bio-Angel and the Word Potter. "These are but a few of the talented poets we have in George," said LadyK.
Entrance is free and Ladyblaq and LadyK invite all to this unique poetry event at the Red Door.
The poets invite all who wish to become part of this movement or are interested in learning more about writing or performance poems to contact Ladyblaq on 073 133 0343 or LadyK on 076 253 4793.
